beige dress

January 24, 2011

Today I wanted to show you some art. And a dress. Our last shoot took place in the Pulchri Studio, a large galery here in the Hague. I love shooting pictures in such an environment, because the clothes start to look different to me. It seems that the environment has a huge influence on my perception of my own clothes, and all of a sudden I see new options or variations for future projects. This dress is cut from the same pattern as the very first one I showed here, but now the fabric is a wool blend in stead of a linnen. It makes the dress wrinkle less and it’s a lot warmer too.
The pattern is fairly straight-forward, only the bust darts add some form. The side seams are completely straight, the belt and the collar with the leather strip are the details that make the dress special I think. I could have used simple loops to define the placement of the belt, but what I did is sew a rectangular piece of fabric unto the dress to make a tunnel for the belt. This way the belt becomes a very graphical element.

As for the art, in the first picture I’m looking at a piece by Dindi van der Hoek, in the second I’m standing next to ‘ridders’ (knights) by Sam Drukker and in the last picture I’m standing between Marie Civikov’s work.

jumper

Recognise this one? I drew the idea for this jumper a while ago, and here it is. It’s fairly straight forward, I only exaggerated the raglan sleeves by letting them meet in the middle.

jacket

November 9, 2010

This jacket is made from the same fabric as last week’s beige trousers and the pencil skirt I showed earlier. Although it’s more expensive, I made it a habit to buy at least four meters when I see fabric I like. Especially with a neutral and versatile fabric like this beige jeans. I must admit that my closet starts to become rather full with all kinds of fabric, but it’s good to not feel scared when you cut the fabric. If anything goes wrong, at least I’ve got plenty extra. In fact this is the first jacket I ever made. I used the pattern from the beige t-shirt and the little green dress as the basis, so again no shoulder seams in this jacket. I am working on digitalising the pattern and grading it for different sizes; as soon as it’s done I will put it up for sale. It’s quite a long process because I’ve never done it before, so be patient with me for a few more weeks.

The jacket doesn’t have any pockets, because I was in too big a hurry to make it. I did put a lining in though, a gorgeous mustard shiny satin:

beige trousers

November 5, 2010

Do you recognize these pants? This is what came out of the sketches I posted earlier. It took me a lot of trying, retrying and adjusting before I was happy with the fit. Still the trousers are a bit baggy when seen from behind, but that makes them super-comfy too. The decorative pleats I added for the zipper, also add fabric to a place where no extra fabric is needed. I could have stitched those pleats to close them, but then the pleats are less visible and the effect is destroyed. Although now one leg seems to be slightly more voluminous than the other, I’m rather happy with how it all turned out.

beige skirt

October 25, 2010

I felt my wardrobe really needed a smart pencil skirt: here it is. I must admit the cut-out wasn’t my own idea. When I saw it in  Céline’s winter 2010 collection, I immediately fell for it and decided to make my own version. I chose a light beige jeans fabric, because I’m going to ignore those dark wintercolors for as long as I can.

t-shirt

October 8, 2010

And this is what the t-shirt came out like. I added a high collar and buttons on the back, because I think the back is just as important as the front of your outfit. Looking in the mirror you might miss it, but other people see your back probably just as often as your face. So why not add some extra detail to it then?
