my grandma’s buttons

May 19, 2011

I’m sorry I’ve been a bit quiet lately. My excuse is that with my sewing skills improving, the designs in my head get more and more complex too. Or at least more labour intensive. The fabric I work with for this blouse is a very thin satin viscose. I tried sewing it on my regular straight stitch machine with a special micro-needle, but the fabric just damages and I have to sew the whole blouse by hand.. which takes forever as you can imagine. Yesterday I finished the neckline, and I found the perfect button for it: one of the glass buttons I inherited from my grandma. I’ve never known her, but apparently she was a great craftress as well.

In the mean time I’m busy with the preperation of next week’s celebration of this blog’s one year anniversary. To share the fun, and to raise a bit of money so I can continue doing this, I decided to sell a few dresses on etsy. Have a look, and maybe one on my dresses can be yours!

red skirt plus blouse

April 27, 2011

Red skirt, the  new blouse and the grey vest I made some time ago. Golden hour at a metrostation in The Hague, pictures by Eelke. Isn’t it a good combination?

blouse details

April 22, 2011

Here’s the detail picture of the neckline I promised in the previous post. As I said yesterday, the pattern I used as a basis was intended for a dress with raglan sleeves and a wrinkled neckline. Often with raglan sleeves a dart is needed at the top of the shoulders to get rid of excess fabric around the neckline. A wrinkled neckline solves that problem too and adds a decorative element. Most of the width of the inital pattern was in the bodice of the dress. The armscye is always a tricky part, so I left it exactly as it was. To reduce the width in the bodice, I took out approximately 10 cm in the middle and adjusted the neckline a bit. Because it’s such a loose blouse, the side seams are straight without any darts at bust height, which made it easy to adjust the pattern like this.

Because the fabric for this blouse was so light an a little bit transparant, I decided to use french seams. I really like how they give a very neat finish on the inside of a garment, but I only use them when the seams are fairly straight.

spring and a blouse

April 21, 2011

The weather is getting better around here, so I’m very glad I’ve made this light and airy summerblouse. I like the print very much, it’s got a bit of a japanese feel to it. So it fits that I used the pattern for a dress with a wide wrinkled neckline from a japanese sewing book I mentioned months ago. The pattern was intended for a dress, but I made it a bit tighter and a lot shorter to make this blouse. More details tomorrow!

black top

February 20, 2011

New shots! And a different photographer this time. Crijn, a friend of mine who loves photography, wanted to practice on capturing people. Me and my project turned out to be the perfect guinea pig, so we had fun afternoon shooting in front of the dance theatre. As a kid I’ve once had a school musical performance there, but that’s a different story.
What you see here is a very very cold me, modelling a black see-through blouse with a triangular collar piece. For this top I recycled the pattern of the green greek dress and added long sleeves. The triangular piece is stitched on top of the front piece, which makes that part not transparant at all. The draped pleats form because the triangular collar piece is cut with a wider bottom angle than the triangle to which I stitched it. Does that make sense?
The top isn’t entirely appropriate to wear in these last days of winter, but hey, a girl’s gotta wear what a girl wants to show on her blog.. Now that I think of it, a night out to the theatre would actually be a perfect occasion to wear it.

knitted top

February 15, 2011

The last pictures from our shoot in the Pulchri studio. At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to show these. The color of the wool is great, the different shades of blue work well with the forest green. What bothers me is the fit of the top. I wanted to make a loose, supple sort of top but somehow it got too tight. So, although Eelke did a great job in capturing the color and the material, I’m gonna take apart the green bit and try to get the armholes and the neckline a bit deeper and wider. Will keep you posted!
