introducing: me

May 25, 2010

So here I am, feeling naked and nervous. My first blog post, introducing me.

I think this started when I got my first sewing machine. A Niemann, one of those antique machines where you need one hand to drive the machine and the other to lead the fabric through. My teddybear got quite a collection of crooked dresses after that.

But today I’m on a mission. My wardrobe is a mess, I’m dissatisfied with the clothes at H&M and I don’t want to pay ridiculous prices for designer pieces that are quite simple to make yourself. Starting today I will try to wear and make my own clothes, and keep you posted on the process.

  1. Hey Renske, vind je blog echt geweldig! Jouw drijfveren klinken echt zo bekend.
    keep up the good work!

  2. Hi There,
I am so glad to have stumbled upon your blog. I love what you are doing- conceptually and aesthetically. I am just wondering how you learnt to sew so well? Did you study fashion design? You take lots of (calculated) risks in your sewing I would be too scared to take. But your blog challenges me to jump in and have a go!
    Much love (from Australia),
    kt

    • Amazing to have readers even in Australia! I’ve been sewing since I was a kid, so a lot of crooked half finished dresses preceded the ones I’m showing here :-) . I’ve studied industrial design, which is different, but taught me to think in 3D quite well. My sewing skills mainly come from doing it a lot and not being afraid to mess it up sometimes. So go ahead and have a go, I always find it rewarding. Love, Renske

  3. Hi Renske,

I completely recognize your story.. I feel the same, Thats why I’m in the Free Fashion Challenge together with my two year old. But this means also no fabric shopping. I have to work with what we own for a whole year….

My sewing isn’t that good, still learning, so I have a lot of miss fits and crooked dresses to work with..

    Thank you for the inspiration,
    keep up the good work

    • I’ve heard of that challenge, and I totally love it. It’s an even bigger challenge than mine when you’re not allowed to by fabric either.. Good luck!
